Preakness Day Picks

Picks & Analysis for 5/20/23

Edit for Results:
PIM10: #13 Beer Can Man paid $9.00 to win just getting up over #1 for a $42.20 exacta.
PIM13: Chalk that one up as a loss with #1 showing the famous BB re-break at 5/2.
GP12: #8 Wide West held strong to pay a solid $15.20 on the win.
BEL11: #1 was a scratch.

Pimlico | Race 10 | Turf | 5.5 Furlongs
#1 Nothing Better
The one to beat off a string of massive and consistent running lines but plenty of bad things can happen from the #1 hole to hinder and only a couple rivals stand out here as value to upset.

#13 Beer Can Man
In the needed race after a 14-month break, runner was well-supported and can move forward now as the stretch run was encouraging when he wasn’t urged much late by rider but still ran on very well on own will.

 #10 Coppola
Reeling back in 18 days off a nice uptick where runner that has been putting up 80+ Finals suddenly tightened things up in terms of turf spread and I expect to see a similar big effort today.

Preakness Stakes | Pimlico | Race 13 | Dirt | 9.5 Furlongs
#3 Mage, your Derby winner, looks poised to snag the second jewel of the Triple Crown here with a disappointing field drawn. Many are deflecting to #1 National Treasure as the one to upset on the heels of bullet works, but this one bodes tough to trust for me. Runner has been popping bullets entire career so nothing special there and has ran disappointing multiple times. As an upset shot, I’m more looking to #5 Red Route One who needs a set-up as he’ll be out of position early, but nonetheless stands out with his big negative dirt spreads indicating he’ll be coming hard in stretch.

Gulfstream Park | Race 12 | Turf | 5 Furlongs
#8 Wide West (8/1 ML)
Expecting improvement today with last turf try coming as a needed race but now quickly into racing condition, she exits a Tapeta score featuring a massive 101 2F Figure.

Belmont Park | Race 11 | Dirt | 8 Furlongs
#1 Global Stage (7/2 ML)
Good-looking start to career going COMP / NPT and figures to take advantage of the stretch out in distance off those tight dirt spreads sprinting.
